http://bit.ly/9hUf4b From the definition in Wikipedia, mechatronics is "the synergistic combination of mechanical engineering ("mecha" for mechanisms, i.e., machines that 'move'), electronic engineering ("tronics" for electronics), and software engineering." There are very few applications which provide a better example of advanced mechatronics than articulated robots. Although it may appear simple, the robot in this video (from Berkeley's College of Engineering) is an excellent example of advanced mechatronics using LabVIEW. The mechanical and electrical pieces in this example are pretty obvious (robotic arm, motors that make the arm move, etc...). What isn't as readily obvious (except for the fact that the robot draws the word "LabVIEW") is how important software is in this application. The LabVIEW program running this robot is really the brain that makes it possible.
