你好！ Have you ever been invited to have meal in a Chinese family’s home? If yes, you must have experienced their hospitality. When treating guests, a Chinese family always prepares a big meal to show their hospitality and politeness. However, to show modesty is another significant part of the culture of Asia. So the host will probably say it’s just a simple meal, even if it’s like a feast. 你好！你有没有去过中国人的家里吃饭呢？如果有，你一定感受到了中国人有多热情。如果家里来客人，中国人通常会做一顿大餐以示礼貌和好客，然而，表示谦逊也是亚洲的一种重要文化。所以即便他们准备了一顿很丰富的饭菜，他们也会说简单地吃个饭。 In Chinese we have the word便饭, 便 which means “simple and casual”, so 便饭together means simple meal. If a Chinese friend invites you for a meal, he or she might say: 来我家吃个便饭吧！ Come and have a simple meal with us! 中文里有个词“便饭”。便是“简单方便“，所以便饭的意思是简单的一顿饭。如果一个中国朋友邀请你吃饭，他们可能说”来我家吃个便饭吧！“ Let’s see a story concerning today’s topic.但是如果你到了朋友家，你可能发现，那餐饭一点也不简单。 场景：一个外国人被中国友人邀请吃便饭，他不明“便饭”的意思，于是向中国女同事请教。 男：Hi Doris，问你个问题。Hi Doris, I have a question. Doris：什么问题？What Question? 男：我的一个中国朋友请我去吃便饭，什么是便饭？你看！（边说边拿着手机给Doris看聊天记录，记录显示：木村，周末有时间吗？来我家吃个便饭吧？）My Chinese friend invited me for a “bian fan.” What’s bianfan? Have a look!
