(9 Jan 2001) Eng/Serbo-Croat/Nat XFA Biljana Plavsic, a nationalist wartime Bosnian Serb leader-turned Western ally, left for The Hague on Tuesday after being summoned by the United Nations war crimes tribunal, apparently on suspicion of genocide and crimes against humanity. Plavsic was a key aide to Radovan Karadzic, Bosnia's No. 1 war crimes suspect during the 1992-1995 war. According to Svetozar Mihajlovic, a top official in Plavsic's Serb National Alliance, Plavsic flew to The Hague in a Bosnian Serb government plane, though no details of the possible war crimes charges against her have been revealed. In Republika Srpska, an Serbian entity in Bosnia, the officials were surprised by the news. SOUNDBITE (Serbo-Croat): "I believe she has some reasons why she chose this way, to go to the Hague voluntarily. I firmly believe that they would not be able to find her responsible for crimes. She was a respectable politician during her mandate, that's why I believe she will stay in the Hague for a short amount of time." SOUNDBITE (Serbo-Croat): "Personally I believe that she will be the first Bosnian-Serb person to come back from the Hague, cleared of the indictment. Mrs Plavsic was member of the Bosnian Serb presidency during the war, but she didn't have a lot of influence there, and absolutely she wasn't involved in any war crimes", SUPERCAPTION: Cedo Vrzina, Bosnian Serb Justice Minister Both the U-N tribunal and international officials in Bosnia have refused to comment on reports that Plavsic has been indicted for war crimes. Mirza Hajric, the adviser on foreign policy to the three member Bosnian presidency, said on Tuesday that the Bosnian government has received intelligence information that Biljana Plavsic had visited Belgrade three days ago in an attempt to obtain political asylum there. Her request was reportedly denied by the authorities in Belgrade and it was only then that she agreed to go to the Hague to answer to war crimes allegations. SOUNDBITE: (English) "I understand that Mrs Plavsic was having consultations in Belgrade a couple of days ago and then she decided to turn herself in to the Hague authorities. I also believe that she knew about a sealed indictment, and she knew that when she goes to the plane for the Hague that she would end up in prison." SUPERCAPTION: Mirza Hajric, adviser on foreign policy to the three member Bosnian presidency Plavsic had turned from being a staunch supporter of Bosnian Serb wartime leader Radovan Karadzic - himself indicted and at large - to a key Western ally among Bosnian Serbs over the past few years. SOUNDBITE: (English) "A couple of years ago, she was by majority of international community representatives in Bosnia Herzegovina treated as a democratic leader in Bosnia Herzegovina, and I think that this sealed indictment is a warning to those in the international community. And I think that after this case, they should be much more careful who they cooperate with and who they believe are the real democratic leaders, or the real democrats for change in Bosnia Herzegovina."
