Mr. Vance’s “Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis” (HarperCollins, 2016) is a first-person account of the dysfunction that affects many working-class whites in America. Dr. Murray’s “Coming Apart: The State of White America, 1960-2010” (Crown Forum, 2012) identifies many of the same problems and trends affecting the residents of his fictional white working-class Fishtown. Both explore the role of culture, individual circumstance, and responsibility in the social and economic decline of the white working class.
