Comet's Cottage, original tale written by Adam Holton for the Tale Telt project, and read in Cumbrian dialect by Neil Airey. Throughout 2024 and 2025, Keswick Museum’s Story Researcher, Hannah Fox, went out and about across Cumbria, listening to people’s wild and wonderful local tales. Funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, our Tale Telt project was inspired by the rich storytelling tradition in Cumbria. We wanted to capture people telling tales in and from their own corner of the county and bring them together in an exhibition. The stories, gathered at agricultural shows, village fêtes, in cafés, pubs and on the street, range from tall tales and local legends to modern fables and curious yarns, capturing the ever-evolving tradition of storytelling in our area. The stories are a mixture of written and spoken tales, with the written tales being performed by local storytellers.
