This classic Action News broadcast anchored by the late Jim Mathews, sports with Bill Peito, and weather with the late Bob Buchanan. One of the reporters is longtime WBNG Action News legend Greg Catlin. This was back when Ch 12 was at 50 Front Street Downtown Binghamton. Jim Mathews replaced Larry Estepa as anchor of WBNG Action News from 1979-88. Jim was fired from Ch 12 in March 1988 for operating WINR radio. Jim was briefly a midday DJ at WINR in the spring of 1988. Jim returned to TV in late April 1988 as a reporter at WICZ News 40. When WICZ revamped the station as well as it's newscast, Jim was back at the anchordesk as anchor of News Team 40 on July 4, 1988. Jim anchored Ch 40 for 2 years and it was the last stop in his Binghamton TV career before Jim & his family moved to Arizona where he lived for the rest of his life. He died in the spring of 2018 at age 66. Greg Catlin was on WBNG Action News from 1982-2008. Greg joined Action News in 1982 as the lead Elmira Bureau reporter (Action News had an Elmira Bureau from 1982-90). Then in 1983, Greg made it to 50 Front Street and became anchor of Action News at Noon in 1984. Greg had his first run as anchor replacing Jim Mathews from 1988-89. Afterwards, Greg stayed with the station as a reporter on Action News. Greg was the first anchor of Action News This Morning when it premiered in the spring of 1993. Greg was the first anchor of Action News at 5:00 when it premiered in September 1994. When Action News expanded to 90 minutes in September 1996, Candice Chapman anchored from the studio at 5:00, Greg from the newsroom at 5:30, and Greg & Candice together from the studio at 6:00. That was Greg's second run as anchor of Action News from 1996-2008. Then Greg became general manager of WBNG Ch 12 from 2008-14. Greg later became President & CEO of WSKG from 2016-22 until he retired from broadcasting. Bob Buchanan was our legendary weatherman at Ch 12 from 1967-98 until he retired. In addition, he hosted the morning show Action Views from 1979-90 and it was pre-taped. Bob was a Korean War Veteran served in the U.S. Army. He died in early 2007 at age 73. Bill Peito started his career at this station long before he went to ESPN by the 90s & 2000s. With Bill at the time for Action Sports was fellow future ESPN anchor Karl Ravitch. Today, Bill now anchors at MSG.
