‘When the Streets Ran with Blood’ tells the story of butchers, cattle markets and slaughter houses from the 18th century to the present day, going back to the days when the Leeds butchers’ Shambles was in Briggate, the Cattle Market was on the site of Kirkgate Market, and the site of today’s Victoria Quarter was occupied by seven large slaughter houses. Dr Kevin Grady is a leading expert on the history and development of Leeds, and is well known for his books and public lectures. He was Director of Leeds Civic Trust for almost thirty years until his retirement in 2016. Today he is a Council member of the Thoresby Society and is President of the Leeds Library. This is his 15th annual series of free lunchtime lectures about the history of Leeds, presented this year on Zoom.
