WiseBond Epoxy: The truth about epoxy heat resistance and parlor tricks!

Yep… We’ve ALL seen the videos and heard the outrageous claim for “heat resistant” epoxy up to 600 degrees Fahrenheit. Today we are here to share our thoughts about differences between heat resistance, and heat resistant epoxy. A very popular question we get daily is, “Is your epoxy heat resistant?” Well, no. But kind of. Our epoxies – like many brands on the market - are designed to withstand hot temperatures up to 120 degrees, or for comparison, a hot cup of coffee. Simply put, our epoxy has heat “resistance” up to 120F against epoxy distortion and warping caused by high heat. Going above 120F can cause the epoxy to “distort,” aka, soften or dent. But will more often than not heal on its own. We always recommend using trivets, hot pads, and coasters, just like you would with any other nice table or countertop! I mean really? Why would anyone put a hot object hotter than a cup of coffee on a kitchen surface? Would you put the Thanksgiving turkey roaster straight out of the oven on a Formica or granite countertop? Or your hot Mac & Cheese pot off the stove burner? We hope not. Always use a protective barrier. Now when you see “Heat Resistant” epoxy claims for temperatures that are much higher than 120F, those claims are NOT referring to “heat resistance,” which has a point of failure. Any claim for a “Heat Resistant” epoxy is actually saying the epoxy will never fail, at any extreme high temperature. Think about that! The truth is, at high temperatures above 120F, epoxies can be permanently damaged and that is something that no one wants. Parlor tricks with lighter fluid do not establish any amount of real world “Heat Resistance” or an epoxy being “Heat Resistant!” It’s that simple. In all seriousness, if you use common sense and treat your epoxy tables and counters properly, you will be perfectly fine! You will have a beautiful finish for years to come.
