#4K #WalkingTour #Korea Today, the Han River divides the northern and southern portions of Seoul, but that function was once served by Cheonggye Stream. Development was undertaken in the early 15th century to build bridges and prevent flooding, and it was subsequently put to use for sewage dispoal. During their occupation of Korea from 1910 -1945, the Japanese developed multiple plans to cover the stream, but none came to fruition due to a lack of funding. After the Korean War, refugees built a shanty town along the stream's banks. An open sewer, lined with dilapidated huts populated by people in the squalor of poverty, was not a look the government wanted to maintain. In 1955, a four stage project was begun to cover the stream, lay a street along its course,, and build an elevated roadway above that. The shanty town was demolished, its residents forcibly removed, and replaced with buildings for commercial interests to become an industrial center. The project was completed in 1977. Over the next few decades, the area deteriorated and came to be seen as a negative consequence of Korea's drive toward "industrialization at all costs". In 2003, under Seoul mayor Lee Myung Bak, the elevated roadway was demolished and the restoration of the stream begun. It was completed in 2005. Today, the sidewalks along the stream, below the street level, are heavily trafficked by pedestrians in the warmer months: people taking exercise, enjoying the scenery, or simply avoiding the intersections above as they walk from one point to another along its route. In this video, I wanted to capture the scenery after a fresh snow. For more on the history of Cheonggyecheon: http://www.preservenet.com/freeways/F... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheongg... We start at Dongdaemun Station Gate 8 and head west along Chonggyecheon-ro. I opted to stay on the sidewalk above the stream in order to get a good view of the stream and the buildings surrounding it. So I moved to one of the sidewalks opposite the stream until the next block. We end the walk at Gate 5 of Gwanghwamun Station in the heart of the city. Some notable points of interest along the way: At 01:04 we see one of the major gates from the old city wall, Heunginjimun, colloquially known as Dongdaemun (Great East Gate). This whole area we're passing through is today known as Dongdaemun Market, and as we turn west along stream we can see shops on both sides. Crossing the stream on Beodeul Bridge, we see a memorial to Jeon Tae-il, a labor rights activist who died from self-immolation in 1970 at the age of 22 to protest working conditions in Korea. At 17:30 we see Gwangjang Market (which used to be Dongdaemun Market) to our north, and Bangsan Market to our south. The former is one of the oldest traditional markets in Korea, the latter is the place to go if you need to buy pressed wrapping paper or shopping bags. At 18:20, a sign shows pedestrians are prohibited from using the sidewalk--this stretch is reserved for bicycles--but it's only for a block or so. From 25:35, we see signs that the revitalization of central Seoul is still underway, as the buildings to our right are empty marked for demolition along the next block. At 40:40 we enter an area that has already benefitted from revitalization. From here to the end of our walk, we see lots of the modern and very little of the old.
