Aisense Gamma, hotspot locator, at JSI Tandetron accelerator laboratory in Ljubljana, Slovenia

The newly developed handheld instrument Aisense Gamma detects sources of gamma radiation. It displays, in real time, both the dose rate and, more importantly, the direction to the dominant source in the vicinity. The device was originally developed for the usage in nuclear power plants and for first responders in orphan source scenarios. This is the first such instrument worldwide. The key info, direction to the source, is obtained by special placement of sensors, the information is processed in a DSP to determine the direction in real time. The difference between the instrument and existing radiation monitoring devices is straightforward: if compared to plain dose rate meters - the key additional feature is the information on the direction to the source, if compared to radiation cameras - beside the much lower Aisense Gamma cost, the key advantage is the direction information in real time, no exposition time needed.
