Trigonometric functions are the mathematical tools used to connect the angles of a triangle with the lengths of its sides. While there are six main functions, they are all derived from the same three sides: the Perpendicular (P), the Base (B), and the Hypotenuse (H). 1. The Primary Functions These are the three fundamental ratios you will use most often. Function Abbreviation Ratio Formula Memory Trick (SOH-CAH-TOA) Sine \sin \theta \frac{\text{Perpendicular}}{\text{Hypotenuse}} Sine = Opposite / Hypotenuse Cosine \cos \theta \frac{\text{Base}}{\text{Hypotenuse}} Cosine = Adjacent / Hypotenuse Tangent \tan \theta \frac{\text{Perpendicular}}{\text{Base}} Tangent = Opposite / Adjacent Note: "Opposite" is another word for Perpendicular, and "Adjacent" is another word for Base. 2. The Reciprocal Functions Each primary function has a "partner" function that is simply its flipped (reciprocal) version. Important Relationships Beyond the basic ratios, these functions interact in specific ways that are vital for solving higher-level problems: The Quotient Identity Tangent can also be found by dividing Sine by Cosine: Helpful Mnemonics If "SOH CAH TOA" doesn't stick, many students use this sentence to remember the ratios for Sine, Cosine, and Tangent (in that order): "Some People Have, Curly Brown Hair, Turn Permanently Black."
