“In a Little While We’re Going Home” is a joyful hymn that expresses the Christian’s hope in the soon return of Jesus Christ. With an uplifting melody and words of assurance, it reminds believers that the struggles and sorrows of this life are only temporary and that soon, God’s faithful people will be gathered home to heaven. The hymn radiates faith, peace, and anticipation, encouraging worshippers to persevere through trials and to rejoice in the promise of eternal rest. Its refrain—“In a little while we’re going home”—beautifully captures the heart of Adventist belief: that Christ’s coming is near, and that every moment brings us closer to everlasting joy. Each verse emphasizes: Hope and courage for life’s journey. Faithfulness in service while waiting for Jesus. Joyful expectation of eternal reunion and peace. The hymn was written by Eliza Edmunds Hewitt (1851–1920), a devoted Christian educator and hymn writer from Philadelphia. Although she suffered from a painful spinal injury that confined her for long periods, her hymns overflow with hope, cheer, and spiritual victory. She wrote “In a Little While We’re Going Home” around 1898, and the tune was composed by John R. Sweney (1837–1899), a well-known American gospel composer and choir director. The collaboration between Hewitt and Sweney produced several enduring gospel hymns, this one being among their most beloved. The message of the hymn draws inspiration from John 14:1–3, where Jesus promises to return and take His followers to the place He has prepared for them. It became a treasured song among early Adventists because of its joyful assurance of Christ’s soon return and eternal homecoming.
