One of Marseille’s Most Beautiful Castles

The château was originally built in the 17th century as a country estate for wealthy Marseille families. At that time, the area around the castle was mostly rural countryside, filled with farms, vineyards, and olive groves. The building served as a private residence and agricultural estate. Over the centuries it passed through the hands of several noble and bourgeois families who expanded and modified the structure. The château became famous thanks to the writer and filmmaker Marcel Pagnol. In his autobiographical novel Le Château de ma mère (1957), Pagnol described the castle as a mysterious and somewhat intimidating place he saw during childhood walks in the surrounding hills. For young Pagnol, the château represented a symbol of authority and mystery, and it became an iconic location in his memories of Provence.
