I was in Haiti approx. 7 times between 1976 and 1979. I met and worked with several artists and musicians. Somewhere I met Patrick Anson who, among his businesses from Queens, NY to Port-au-Prince Haiti, had created Macaya Records. This session August 24, 1976 was a way to promote Les Freres Dejean and their new record "International" I don't believe this tape was ever formally edited or broadcast anywhere and no funds ever exchanged hands. I did pay the studio, equipment rentals and the crew. Patrick and the 10 musicians drove up to Northern Studios in Maynard, Massachusetts from Queens in the afternoon and drove back that evening! (see the John O'Leary video in the Videos In Color Playlist for more on Northern) I edited in the album cover near the end and cut in some pre-shoot banter at the very end. Haitian music groups of this era often called their music Mini-jazz but is more widely known as Compas, Konpa, or Kompa dance music from a meringue root. Most is sung in French creole and at least one in Spanish as Haiti shares the island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic. For more information on Les Freres Dejean see the wikipedia page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Les_Fr%.... which at the bottom has an external link to the Discogs list of their albums. Any help in lyric translations to English would be most appreciated. Many thanks to @eliechampagne9108 for naming the performers in this video! All the flaws and miscues of no video rehearsals for a live switching program is evident but there are many excellent shots. Two of the Cameramen were Mark Allen and Alex Washington. The great audio mix was by Derek Huntington who I shared a much smaller space at that same time in Watertown MA for a couple of years. His video is in the Music Videos B&W Playlist. He was assisted by Rex Merrill and some Northern engineers helped on the floor and in the control room. Audio on some portion maybe mono with Stereo simulation. There maybe some duplication of songs as we may have done two run thrus of the same set and the jumble of old footage. In the 80's Sony offered for a nominal fee to transfer their analog tape to dv mini tapes which I did. I created DVD's in 2007 and reconverted files is where we see this slightly edited footage now.
