Oct 20 - JR Payne - Colorado- Building Chemistry and Confidence in Year 10 at Colorado -NEW

Summary University of Colorado Women’s Basketball Head Coach J.R. Payne joined HoopsTracker to discuss her 10th season leading the Buffs and the outlook for a reloaded roster ahead of the new Big 12 campaign. With nearly ten new faces — including five transfers and five freshmen — Payne emphasized team chemistry, competitiveness, and depth as defining strengths of this year’s squad. Despite the turnover, Payne says the team’s vibe is “as good as we’ve ever had,” with a mix of hardworking gym rats, versatile scorers, and disciplined defenders ready to make an impact in their debut Big 12 season. BOULDER, Colo. — Entering her tenth season at the helm, Coach J.R. Payne is embracing both change and opportunity. With the Buffs now fully immersed in the Big 12 Conference, Payne’s team looks very different — and very dangerous. “We have five transfers, five freshmen, and three returners,” Payne said. “But every single one of them is contributing in their own way. The chemistry is as good as we’ve ever had here.” Payne credited her staff’s recruiting focus on competitive yet easy-going personalities for creating a balanced locker room. She describes a roster full of “gym rats” — players eager to put in extra work, develop, and play unselfishly. The Buffs will rely on returning standouts like Jade Masagayo, an All-Conference Big 12 selection, and Kennedy Sanders, who finished last season strong and has emerged as a vocal leader. Both have helped the newcomers acclimate quickly to the team’s culture and system. Among the new additions, Annayel Dutat, a French transfer and biomedical engineering major, has impressed with her combination of athleticism and IQ, while Desiree Wooten, a transfer guard, brings elite defense and energy. “Annayel can change the game on both sides of the floor,” Payne said. “And Desiree’s athleticism and defensive mindset have already made a big impact.” As Colorado prepares for its first full Big 12 schedule, Payne remains “cautiously optimistic” about what’s ahead. With depth at every position — from strong post play to dynamic guard leadership — this Buffs squad has all the ingredients to surprise people. “I think we’ll be pretty good this year,” Payne said with a smile. Now entering her 10th season in Boulder, Payne’s enthusiasm remains unwavering: “Time flies, but I love what we’re building here.” Follow @HoopsTracker for more exclusive interviews, player features, and Colorado basketball coverage all season long. https://HoopsTracker.net
