Will ovarian cysts affect my ability to get pregnant?

Ovarian cysts are actually very common, and if you’ve been told that you have one, you might be wondering “Will it be harder to get pregnant or will it affect me once I am pregnant?” It all goes back to the different type of cyst that you have. For example, a lot of women get cysts associated with their monthly cycle and those aren’t harmful, they’re not going to affect your ability to get pregnant. And once you get pregnant, sometimes women develop little cysts and they may persist for a while, but they’re not going to threaten the pregnancy. Another very common type of cyst is called a dermoid cyst, and it sounds disgusting, but it can be filled with fat, and teeth, and hair. They don’t usually threaten your health and well-being, but if they get big enough, then sometimes they need to be removed by surgery. Now there are a couple of underlying medical conditions that can cause ovarian cysts which make it harder for women to get pregnant. These are polycystic ovarian syndrome (also known as PCOS) and also endometriosis. Now with PCOS, the woman’s body, instead of releasing an egg each month, releases a bunch of tiny little cysts. And that, in and of itself, is not harmful, but the condition can make it hard for a woman to get pregnant. In the case of endometriosis, tissue that normally grows inside the woman’s uterus is found outside of the uterus, and it can cause a lot of pain and scarring, and sometimes that can affect the fallopian tubes and other structures, even the ovaries, and make it difficult for the woman to conceive because it’s affecting the process of conception. Cancer is always on the back of people’s minds when they’re told that they have ovarian cysts, but rest assured that cancer is only the cause for ovarian cysts in 1% of cases and it’s more likely to happen when a woman is older. So chances are, if you have an ovarian cyst, it’s due to one of the other explanations that I talked about earlier. So as you can see, there’s many types of ovarian cysts. Some might affect pregnancy, some might not, and so if you’ve been told that you have one, I suggest talking with your doctor about it, and based on their knowledge of your circumstances, they’ll be able to tell you what type it is and if it will affect your ability to have a baby. If so, then they’ll talk about treatments that will help you achieve your dreams of having a baby.
