My Journey in the Research of Iranian Arms and Armor: The Military Museum of Shiraz in Afifabad Palace (part 2) The Afif-Abad Military Museum, located in Shiraz, Fars Province, Iran, is a fascinating historical site that combines architectural beauty with a rich military history. Location: The museum is situated within the Afif-Abad Garden (also known as Golshan Garden), one of the oldest and most beautiful gardens in Shiraz. Historical Significance: The garden dates back to the Safavid dynasty (1501–1736), when it served as a royal palace for Safavid kings. The current main building was constructed in 1863 by Mirza Ali Mohammad Khan Qavam II, a prominent Qajar-era figure. Name Origin: After Mirza Ali Mohammad Khan's death, the garden was inherited by his niece, Afife, which is how it acquired the name "Afif-Abad.“ Architecture and Design The building is a stunning example of Qajar-era architecture, blending Persian and European styles. It features intricate designs, beautiful reception halls, and rooms adorned with paintings and decorative elements. The garden itself is a classic Persian garden, with lush greenery, fountains, and a serene atmosphere, making it a popular spot for both tourists and locals. Museum Collections First Floor: The museum houses a collection of military artifacts, including historical weapons, uniforms, and equipment from different eras of Iranian history. This section provides insight into the military history of Iran. Second Floor: The upper floor features beautifully decorated reception halls and rooms, showcasing paintings, mirrors, and other artistic elements. Cultural and Touristic Importance The Afif-Abad Garden and Museum are not only a testament to Iran's rich history but also a symbol of the country's cultural heritage. The site is a popular destination for tourists interested in history, architecture, and Persian gardens. The museum offers a unique blend of military history and artistic beauty, making it a must-visit attraction in Shiraz The fact that the Military Museum of Shiraz, along with the museums in Tehran and Bandar Anzali, originated from the personal collection of Nasser al-Din Shah Qajar adds another layer of historical context. Nasser al-Din Shah, who ruled Iran from 1848 to 1896, was known for his interest in preserving and collecting artifacts, which reflects his appreciation for Iran's rich heritage. His collection likely served as a foundation for understanding the evolution of Iranian arms and armor over centuries.
