Just a video documenting some of the work that went into the first cord of finished axe-cut wood we've made as part of Steven Edholm's Cordwood Challenge. One cord of wood felled, bucked, and split entirely with an axe. Eleven trees were felled for this cord, although some interesting chunks of some of them have been saved for other projects, or it might have been fewer trees. The main objection many people have to this is that it is too much work. For people interested in increasing their axe skills, all of it is work that will intensely increase your abilities with an axe in all respects. Accuracy, control, power, and efficiency. A few of these trees were felled in late November 2016, but the bulk of everything was completed in December and the first cord was stacked and finished December 26th. I intend to continue with the challenge and do two cords this winter. I am having a great deal of fun, and I have noticed a great improvement in my skills in areas of axe use I was formerly not proficient. Particularly with felling, and with chopping with my non-dominant side. Nothing trains your offside like bucking through logs over and over. I cannot claim to be an ambidextrous chopper, but I am competent with either side now. I want to get better, and I want to become more efficient with my felling and limbing. The challenge has also given me an excellent opportunity to train our ox, Star. Repetition in work under different conditions, snow, mud, slopes, crossing creeks, etc. dramatically have improved his reliability and understanding of the work I expect of him. So that has been great. I really want to challenge others to take on the Cordwood Challenge. I really agree with Steven that it would be nice for some of the many people who are Axe Lovers to elevate their game and become active Axe users. Axes area one of our oldest tools, and almost every culture used them since time out of mind. Our own society has so long forgotten what their purpose is that many "Axe Lovers" think cutting up a cord of firewood with one is an impossible amount of work. I can now say with authority that it is NOT impossible, its very doable for a person in reasonable fitness to cut all of their firewood with the outlay of a few weeks work. I spent a month doing this cord at odd times for a few hours every day most days. If I had worked it full time it would have taken me well under a week, and I'm sure I could get faster with that kind of intense effort and focus. Here's a link to Stephen's video describing the Challenge itself. • Official *AXE CORDWOOD CHALLENGE* 2017, In...
