Impulse Response profiles are a wonderful and magical thing! This quick lesson intrudes how to make your own custom profiles to use in your own music. We've provided a very brief and elementary-level glimpse of creating custom impulse response profiles, using Apple's Impulse Response Utility application, for use in your own music. The basic explanation of what IR profiles are and how they work is simply to help get the ball rolling for those who have never worked with them before. For a more detailed explanation and links to more advanced and informative resources, you may want to try starting with a Wikipedia page relating to the topic and explore from there. Convolution reverb is usually associated with large and uniquely-shaped spaces in many peoples' minds. But they also facilitate the use of impulse response profiles, which is the main focus of this lesson. Capturing the space around you in an impulse response profile is just scratching the surface and it only takes a few seconds to do. You can fine-tune the effect it has upon your sounds and music in the convolution reverb unit you have loaded it into. Shape the accompanying reverb parameters to best fit the IR profile and you can achieve some very nice results. The second idea explored in this tutorial is using audio samples as the basis for your impulse response profiles. This is a very powerful way to add truly unique atmospheres and character to your sounds and music. The example of the simple dust atmosphere being used to affect a piano is a great way to instantly add atmospheric character and texture to a song. Had we spent more time on actually applying the profile in a more professional manner, the shape of the reverb volume curve and filter curve would have been the first things to tackle. The pre-delay would have been dialed into achieve the ideal delivery and depth. The stereo spread and dry/wet balance would probably be set-up last. It's a quick and easy way to make things much more interesting and inviting for your listeners! Cheers, OhmLab
