La capitale del Belgio è una città dove tante culture si mescolano; qui gli immigrati rappresentano la maggioranza della popolazione. E' conosciuta per essere la sede delle piu' importanti istituzioni europee. Eppure, forse per il richiamo alla politica internazionale, è vissuta come troppo impegnativa e viene spesso snobbata. La città è un'isola francofona all'interno di un territorio, le Fiandre, dove si parla il fiammingo. La Grand Place o Grote Markt è un gioiello di architettura medievale; a ogni angolo di strada é facile trovare "friterie", che servono le migliori "french fries" al mondo, e "gaufrerie". Nelle Fiandre si concentrano le più grandi fabbriche di cioccolato al mondo. Il vero vanto del Belgio, in fatto di cioccolato, è l’invenzione della cosiddetta pralina, cioccolatino dal guscio croccante e dal ripieno morbido. Bruxelles è anche la capitale della birra. Gli amanti della birra hanno una cospicua varietà di birre a disposizione e la possibilità di grandi bevute senza spendere una cifra, già perchè la birra solo in questa città costa meno dell'acqua minerale! Altra particolarità sono i numerosi murales che raffigurano sulle pareti di case ed edifici di tutta la città gli eroi dei fumetti. Le attrazioni che possono essere considerati simboli del folklore di Bruxelles sono l'Atomium ed il Manneken Pis. Il Manneken Pis è certamente la statua più fotografata della città. Il costo della vita è alto. Per parlare del clima va detto che piove come a Londra. A differenza degli italiani, i belgi a tavola non hanno l’abitudine di preparare un primo e secondo, bensì un piatto unico composito. Una cosa davvero strana per una capitale europea è l'assenza dei cassonetti per la raccolta dei rifiuti, per cui dopo le sei del pomeriggio i sacchi della spazzatura riempiono le strade della città indecorosamente.
