It was a near note-for-note copy of this arrangement that American pianist Johnny Maddox recorded and took to #1 in early 1955 on the Music Vendor chart (#2 on Billboard & Cash Box) • 1955 HITS ARCHIVE: The Crazy Otto - Johnny... At about that same time, the original “Schrage Otto” (German musician Fritz Schulz-Reichel, heard in this post), was gaining fame in the U.S. under the moniker “Crazy Otto.” His LP on the Decca label climbed all the way to #1 during the month of May. This particular honky-tonk-styled piano medley of tunes, the most familiar of which was Irving Berlin’s “Play A Simple Melody,” was originally released as Part 2 of the first of Schulz-Reichel’s six such two-sided “Die beschwipste Drahtkommode” medleys recorded between 1953 and 1960.
