Abnormal sperm morphology and pregnancy | Abnormal sperm morphology treatment explained | Teratozoospermia treatment explained In this video we are going to discuss about abnormal sperm morphology and its relevance with respect to male infertility. A patient is said to have abnormal sperm morphology if the number of normal appearing sperm in his ejaculate is less than 3%. These patients are diagnosed to have teratozoospermia. Moreover, patients with abnormal sperm shape or abnormal sperm morphology frequently have major difficulties in fathering children in the 1st year of marriage. During a semen analysis, a range of different types of sperm shape defects are usually detected. Some sperm morphology or sperm shape issues that are commonly reported include 1. Head defects 2. Mid-piece defects 3. Multiple defects 4. Tail Defects More severe, sperm morphology issues include conditions like globozoospermia (sperms without an acrosomal cap) and pinhead spermatozoa. These defects cannot me managed with medical therapy very well. The reason sperm morphology is crucial and important is because in patients with abnormal sperm morphology, the spermatozoa cannot bind to the egg normally. This can cause severe issues with conceiving naturally. Moreover, sperm morphology problems are usually issues with spermiogenesis. While doing a sperm morphology assessment it is important to score at least 400 spermatozoa as per the Kruger's Strict Criteria as recommended by the WHO 2010 Andrology Laboratory Guideline Values. Not scoring spermatozoa as per these recommendations frequently results in WRONG reports and unwanted medical therapy for the patient.
