Dark Bahamut being defeated under the Overdrives Only ruleset, courtesy of a savefile from NGPlus. Quite a luck-heavy fight but also requires just the right strategy to deal enough damage without getting the party wiped out. There are two major loss conditions in this fight. First and foremost, if Rikku gets killed without Auto-Life, we basically lose. Rikku is the only party member capable of putting up Auto-Life or reviving anyone, so if she goes down we lose our sustain. This is pure RNG, anytime Bahamut kills Rikku there is a 1 in 3 chance he will target her again with his next one and kill her for good. Swapping her out doesn't work because we need Rikku on the frontline to be able to gain overdrive charge in the first place, and any other overdrive mode than Comrade would not gain enough ODs to sustain us. Second loss condition, not a hard one but one that heavily determines the entire fight, is taking an Impulse counterattack with our party members directly. Since it's a counterattack, Bahamut will always take another turn after, resulting in at least one party member getting killed off, leaving us with only 2 party members alive in a horrible spot. It's not absolutely impossible to recover from this position, but it's quite unlikely so really taking Impulse with our party is something we want to avoid at all costs. Dark Bahamut counters with Impulse every 5 times targeted, so this leads us into a natural strategy of attacking him 4 times with our party members, then Grand Summoning an aeon and launching their overdrive, provoking Bahamut into using Impulse against it before then killing it off. This can be lined up nicely with Mega Flare as well, avoiding having the party tanking it, although if needed we could survive it with a full frontline of Auto-Life'd characters since Rikku is fast enough to reapply Hyper Mighty G before the next turn. Now in comes the problem though - Dark Bahamut has 4 million HP, and we only have 6 aeons to summon. The Magus Sisters cannot be obtained since they require the Blossom Crown which can only be obtained via capturing, and Yojimbo has no legal move to use since he has no overdrive. This means we need to be efficient with our damage and only use the highest damaging overdrives we can, since if we simply use weak overdrives, we will run out of aeons before we win. Making matters worse, Valefor has no Break Damage Limit since getting the Nirvana to power up would also require monster capturing. The strongest overdrive we have is, in general, Attack Reels. Now it needs to be said that this savefile is using the Expert Sphere Grid and with monster capturing out of the picture we are hard capped on Strength - Wakka CANNOT get more then 190 Strength. Problem being, this leaves Attack Reels only doing about 110k damage on average. If we map out our attacks, using 4 Attack Reels and then aeon overdrives, across all our available aeons, we come up short, Bahamut having a low six digit HP figure left over - we don't have the damage to win before needing to tank and recover from an Impulse with our party members. Fortunately, there is one more option. Using Trio of 9999 enables us to make use of an even stronger overdrive, namely Lulu's Tier 1 Fury. After adjusting Steam Input settings for the right analog stick I'm able to consistently get 14~15 casts in, which is a lot better than the 110k from before. As a bit of a bonus, Attack Reels does also benefit here, pushing its damage up to 120k. And so the strategy is set - keep Rikku in Hyper Mighty G at all times, set up Trio of 9999 on Lulu (and Wakka) when possible, and launch enough high damaging overdrives to win before we run out of aeons to tank Impulse for us, while praying that he never kills Rikku twice in a row. Meanwhile we can also set up Hyper Mighty G on our backup characters - we can't launch their overdrives since it's just wasted damage, but they can come in as tanks in certain situations to preserve Lulu's Trio status for example. Near the end of the fight I made what I thought at first to be a grievous error - I summoned Valefor when Bahamut was at only 80% overdrive. Energy Blast pushed it to 90%, and Bahamut promptly killed Valefor with a physical attack with his Mega Flare now ready to go against the party. In hindsight however, while I always try to summon at 90% OD to have the aeon tank Mega Flare, doing what I did there is actually the best possible move. Mega Flare can be safely tanked by a party in Auto-Life, and this way we take one fewer physical attack that could lead to a death if it lands on Rikku twice in a row. If I were to redo the fight, I would always try to summon at 80% OD instead now, as long as Rikku is ready to set the party up with Hyper Mighty G for Mega Flare. That is, assuming it is consistent that it's the top slot party member that doesn't get Comrade OD charge, since obviously we just lose if Rikku doesn't get her OD filled from Mega Flare. And that's that.
