How did the opioid crisis start? | The history of opioid started in the 1800s during the civil war. Morphine was used to treat soldiers and many became addicted. Opioids are a class of drugs often referred to as “narcotics” that include heroin, synthetic opioids such as fentanyl, and pain relievers available by prescription, such as oxycodone, hydrocodone, codeine, and morphine. These types of drugs can be beneficial in relieving severe pain in patients at a doctor's discretion. Opioids enter our bloodstream and then attach to the receptors in our brain, releasing signals that mute the perception of pain and boost feelings of pleasure instead. Unfortunately, this is exactly what can make drugs like these so addictive and dangerous. Did you know that from 1999 (around the time opioids such as these entered the scene) to 2020, more than 564,000 people died as a result of an overdose? So when did all of this really start? How far back does the use of opioids go, and how have we let it persist for so many years? That is what we aim to answer in this video. Addiction to drugs like morphine dates back all the way back to the Civil War in the early 1860s. Many soldiers became addicted to opioids as a result of using them to relieve pain during their recovery. As the opioids that entered the market became more and more potent, more addiction cases arose, as well as overdose deaths that were reported. The opioid crisis itself could be broken down into three different waves, one in the 1990s with the introduction of OxyCotin from Purdue Pharma, two in 2010 with an increase in overdose deaths from heroin, and finally, in 2013 with deaths linked to synthetic opioids.
