Global Positioning System, GPS, revolutionized the way we navigate the Earth. Deploying a GPS array on Mars will stretch engineering capacity and expand the horizons of what’s possible in our solar system and beyond. It’s also a precondition of human exploration of Mars and is among the biggest obstacles between us and setting foot on the red planet. Aerospace Systems Engineer Ryan Hesseltine talks about how we develop turn-by-crater navigation on our nearest planetary neighbor. Ryan Hesseltine is a Principal Software/Systems Engineer at BAE Systems, Inc. in Cedar Rapids, IA. He currently works in the military GPS user equipment division. Prior to that he worked at Collins Aerospace in automatic flight controls and advanced data links, and the US Patent and Trademark Office as a patent examiner. He recently received his Master of Science degree in Space Systems Engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ. He received his undergraduate degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Iowa, where he was also in the Hawkeye Marching Band and the US Army Reserves. He enjoys attending Iowa football games, working on his 1967 Mustang, and playing baritone for Iowa Brass, a traditional British Brass Band. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
