Almost everyone knows at least something about the Dead Sea Scrolls, but the scribes who created them remain as mysterious to the public today as they were to Dr. Emanuel Tov twenty-five years ago. He devoted much of his time to uncovering their secrets, alongside his other scholarly activities. On April 5, Dr. Tov will share everything he knows about the scribes – how and what they copied, how they made mistakes and corrected them, how they collaborated with each other, and what they had to learn to become scribes. In short, he will explain how a scroll was produced and how the writing was done. Dr. Emanuel Tov is the J.L. Magnes Professor Emeritus of Bible in the Department of Bible at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Among his many roles, he served as the editor-in-chief of the international publication project for the Dead Sea Scrolls. He has written numerous monographs, including Textual Criticism of the Hebrew Bible, a handbook that has been translated into several languages and is now in its fourth edition (2022). Dr. Tov and his wife, Lika, are frequent visitors to the Lanier Theological Library.
