The northern terminus of the roads on the West Coast. Great place. It’s very remote, few tourists bother with the journey there, unless wanting time on the Heaphy Track. Not in Karamea, Karamea Bend Hut is found further upstream on the Karamea River, just down from the mountains and plateau that divides the West Coast Region from Tasman District. Hearing the name “Karamea” made me want to go there. I had one night. Could I make it? First, I had to tackle the Flora Valley and gawp at the super-interesting places to sleep up there! Thanks to my pal Liv Sisson for the help with captioning the purple pouch fungi.
