Finally, the time came to ride the A380 home. This aircraft, built in 2013, uses the Engine Alliance GP7200 engines like all of Korean Air's five A380s. I sat in the second row of economy on the port side in hopes of seeing the aurora at night (I did not). The block time stated departure from Seoul at 10 AM on December 2nd and landing in New York at 10 AM December 2nd. Fourteen hours, fourteen time zones, so basically time stood still for me. It actually landed about 40 minutes early, so I technically went back in time! Flying east, the A380 took a more southerly track (as you would expect) than the westbound flight. It actually flew almost directly over Mount McKinley! Of course, I could not see much during the night. I slept very little as usual. But the sun rose as the flight crossed the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It crossed the mitten before clouds obscured the ground again. It touched down at JFK smoothly and taxied for a while. The captain had to shut down the engines and have a tug take us to the gate. I guess they do that out of procedure at JFK. Regardless, I completed my longest trip ever and could not wait to go home!
