Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, or ‘Theatre of the Orb of the World’, is the first true modern atlas published in history. It was created by the famous Flemish cartographer, Abraham Ortelius, with strong encouragement from Gillis Hooftman, and published on 20th May 1570 in Antwerp. It made use of eighty-seven sources and consisted of a collection of uniformly designed map sheets and supporting text members bound together to form a book. Description of Theatrum Orbis Terrarum Originally published in Latin, Theatrum Orbis Terrarum was a revolutionary book made up of 70 maps on 53 pages. Its cover featured the arms of the then Spanish held Netherlands, Jean, Comte de Hoya, Bishop of Münster and Osnabrück (1566-74). The maps initially started as a collection of regional maps, and as the technology improved, Ortelius filled them with detailed pictures and vignettes. The back of the book also included a catalogue of authors and artists, a list of geographical atlases held in the Library of Congress, and a description of the Holy Land, which provided additional context and vignettes of the region. Furthermore, Ortelius was the first to introduce then-new geographical information about the newly discovered regions, such as North and South America. Impact of Theatrum Orbis Terrarum Publishing Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, Abraham Ortelius changed the course of history and made an immense impact in the world of cartography. His iconic design of the maps revolutionised the process of creating books with maps. Ortelius' work was so popular that up to 40 different editions were created in different languages and over the years, he continued updating his collection by adding new maps and details. Not only was the atlas a masterpiece in terms of its design, but it also provided detailed descriptions of the world of cartography which had not existed before. The accounts of the Holy Land, for example, were essentially a revolutionary combination of history and geography combined, offering readers a unique insight into the world around them. Theatrum Orbis Terrarum enabled the mass production of maps for the new age and pushed cartography towards the modern era. It became the authoritative source for the world maps and was at the forefront of introducing new geographical knowledge to a broad audience.
