This untitled and unlabelled film has been assumed to show the inauguration ceremony for the memorial at Solferino, Italy, held on 27 June 1959. The ceremony marked the centenary of Henry Dunant's idea to form the Red Cross to rescue soldiers wounded in battle. Views of the surrounding landscapes; a flag hanging on a flagpole; Red Cross nurses and personnel laying wreaths at the memorial; banners of the Italian Red Cross and allied organisations; plaques for countries with National Red Cross or Red Crescent Societies; speeches; the crowd assembled the length of the cyprus-lined avenue in front of the memorial; then President of the League of Red Cross Societies [now the IFRC] Judge Emile Sandström shaking hands with officials; balloons released into the air; ossuary church of San Pietro in Vincoli containing the bones of soldiers who died at the Battle of Solferino; the Red Crescent and Red Cross flags; further speeches; further views of the ossuary and the statue in front.
