The fire department was alerted to a fire incident. For reasons that are still unclear, there was another major fire in the former mattress factory in Hilfarth on Saturday around 8 p.m. In the first emergency reports received by the fire protection and rescue service control center, residents and passers-by reported that a large fire could be seen above the hall building. The first forces were immediately alerted and were able to detect a huge column of fire above the object on the way there and on site. After extensive reconnaissance, the first emergency services were assigned to their operational sections and fire-fighting measures were initiated. Since the fire compartment with an area of 18,000 m2 was located in the middle of the property, the emergency services gave priority to setting up a barrier. This measure was intended to protect the adjacent residential developments and residential buildings. The emergency services and resources on site were quickly integrated into the operational situation and additional forces had to be called in. Fortunately, the fire walls withstood the strain, preventing the fire from spreading to the adjacent sections one and three. With the support of the neighboring communities of Erkelenz, Wegberg, Heinsberg, Geilenkirchen and Gangelt, the fire was brought under control and the subsequent fire safety watch was ensured. The THW illuminated the site extensively and involved the construction consultants as advisors to the operations management. Due to the large number of emergency services, at the top 170, the Maltese and the German Red Cross set up a supply point and provided the forces with warm drinks and a warm meal. The final measures could only be completed on Sunday around 6:00 p.m. This operation kept the emergency services on their toes for almost 22 hours.
