Jai Smits, Director of Revel Building Group, is a builder who has been with Bowens for over five years and recognises the dangers with being complacent. Jai explains that; “When you do a job with the same materials every time, you end up being resistant to change. I think they're really loving what we are offering right now.” Jai has just completed a commercial decking project at the Carrum Downs Cricket Club where he used two new products that he had never tried before – Spantec and PermaTimber®. With Spantec’s steel decking systems you can achieve greater spans than if you used timber. It's also lighter, termite proof and does not rot. The steel comes ready to install and is pre-cut, labelled and punched. The pier heads are also adjustable both during and after installation. “I've been building for 20 years now and I've always used timber. This is the first time we've actually done a decking system with steel and I’m impressed,” says Jai. The process was simple. Jai provided the measurements to Spantec and they created the shop drawings in accordance to council's requirements. The larger of the two decks was asymmetrical so it was critical that all the measurements were spot on. “I went with Spantec because of the innovation – the improvement to the whole process and end results. It’s clear Spantec is going to be a more cost-effective solution in the long run. You're not going to have any follow up issue. I'd definitely recommend it,” says Jai. The PermaTimber® decking boards that Jai used are readily available through Bowens. They are a high quality composite decking board made from 87% recycled material. Jai says it was very easy to install, despite using for the first time. PermaTimber® is very low maintenance which appealed to the local council who manage the facilities. The deck does not require staining, painting or oiling. Being a high foot traffic area, another benefit was that scratches can easily be sanded out. It is also specified to bear heavy loads which is ideal for commercial applications. Michael explains that he is selective in the products he suggests to builders. “Communication is the key for us. It’s important to let our builders know about new products that are on the market but not flood them with stuff that they don't need to know about,” says Michael. Support and good service are very important to the smooth operation of Jai’s business. “I think the follow up and the support that you get from Bowens is excellent,” says Jai. I only need to call Michael, or send him a text message and it's organised straight away. He's never let me down,” Jai says.
