I. Allegro non troppo - 0:00 II. Allegro - 9:07 III. Largo - 12:35 IV. Allegro - 21:28 In 1934, Dmitri Shostakovich had just fallen in love with a young student during a festival in Leningrad. This affair caused a brief divorce from Shostakovich’s wife Nina, a period of intense emotional turmoil during which he worked on the Cello Sonata. The piece was completed within a few weeks in August, and premiered in Moscow on December 25, 1934 with his close friend, Viktor Kubatsky, who whom the piece is dedicated. The sonata features a diverse array of emotion and moods, and is characterized by the juxtaposition of conventional tonality and moments of chromaticism, unusual harmonic progressions, and modulations. The first movement is a melancholy sonatina, featuring an expressive first theme in the cello, and a sweet second theme in the piano. Perhaps the most striking feature of this movement is the “recapitulation”, a suspensive slow-motion pianissimo section. In contrast, the second movement features perpetual motion in the style of a rude rustic dance, in which a playful melody is mashed with an unrelenting rhythmic drive and sudden shifts in character. The third movement is steeped in bleakness and is an exploration of the innermost conflict Shostakovich felt during this time. The childishness of the second movement is mirrored by the whimsy of the fourth, a modified rondo with a jaunty theme. Filled with both youthful innocence and playful mockery, it ends with the following scene: “The man tiptoes home after a night of revelry, hoping not to alert his sleeping wife. As he opens the door, he is met with her wrathful countenance, only to have the door slammed in his face.” Recording Engineer: Louis Ng, https://www.lensonproductions.com Venue: Alfred Newman Recital Hall, USC Thornton
