2500 வருடம் பழமையான 'பொருந்தல்' | 2500 years old Porunthal | SangathamizhanTV | Tamil In this video, I’m going to talk about the archeological findings of Porunthal, an ancient Tamil city which belongs to the Sangam age. The Porunthal village is located 12 km from the Pazhani, Dindigul District of Tamilnadu. During the Sangam Era, this Porunthal was ruled by the Sangam age chieftain ‘Pegan’, who gave his blanket to the Peacock. Porf.K. Rajan and his team from Pondicherry University excavated this Porunthal and found out many interesting artifacts including 2,000 superbly crafted glass beads in red, white, yellow, blue and green, 12,000 beads made of semi-precious material such as agate, quartz, carnelian and steatite, quartz micro-beads with a diameter of less than 1.4 mm and a hole punched through them. bangles made of glass and shell, four-legged jars that vary in height from 12 centimeters to one meter, two ring stands with Tamizhi inscriptions, iron swords, a big iron arrowhead, knives, square copper coin, dice made of ivory, terracotta objects such as a humped bull, a woman's head with curly hair, a human figurine, gamesmen, spindle whorls, and hopscotch; and weights made of quartz and ivory were among the other unearthed artifacts. Apart from this 2 kilograms of paddy were found in one of the four-legged jar. The carbon dating results confirmed this paddy was 2500 years old and belongs to 490 BC. The researchers further identified that this Paddy belongs to Oryza sativa indica variety of rice, which we eat even today. This archeological research confirmed that the Tamils are advanced in farming even before 2500 years and Tamizhi scripts are older than the Asoka Brahmi which is just 2300 years old. This porunthal excavation is an important finding in Tamil history.
