The rehabilitation of atrophic jaws presents a significant challenge in implant dentistry due to insufficient bone volume, often necessitating advanced surgical interventions such as bone grafting or sinus lifting. Short dental implants, typically defined as implants ≤8 mm in length, have emerged as a viable alternative to overcome these anatomical limitations without extensive augmentation procedures. Recent studies demonstrate that short implants can achieve comparable success rates to standard-length implants, particularly when placed using proper surgical techniques and supported by appropriate prosthetic planning. Their use reduces treatment time, cost, and patient morbidity, offering a less invasive approach for restoring function and aesthetics in compromised ridges. Advances in implant surface technology, thread design, and improved load distribution have further enhanced the predictability of short implants in both the maxilla and mandible. Clinical outcomes indicate favorable osseointegration and long-term stability, especially when occlusal forces are well-managed. However, careful case selection, precise placement, and strict adherence to biomechanical principles remain essential for optimal results. In conclusion, short implants represent a reliable, minimally invasive solution for managing atrophic jaws, providing an effective treatment alternative to more complex reconstructive procedures.
