Hidden in the heart of the Alentejo lies one of Portugal’s most important archaeological sites: the Gruta do Escoural, or Escoural Cave. 🗣️ Subtitles in both English and Portuguese/legendas em inglês e português This prehistoric cave in the municipality of Montemor-o-Novo contains Portugal’s only known examples of Paleolithic cave art, alongside evidence of Neolithic burials and later settlements. The art includes painted and engraved images of animals, geometric symbols, and abstract markings made as much as 20,000 to 30,000 years ago, and still faintly visible today. In this video: 👉🏼 Walk inside the only known cave with prehistoric art in Portugal 👉🏼 Learn how this cave was used over tens of thousands of years: from Neanderthal shelter to Paleolithic art gallery, and later as a Neolithic burial site 👉🏼 See examples of ancient paintings and engravings, and learn why some may soon disappear 👉🏼 Reflect on how early humans saw, remembered, and marked their world through symbols and shapes carved in stone 🎟️ Visiting Tip: The cave is open to visitors by appointment only. You must book a guided tour through the local municipality. 🔗 More details — including how to visit and what to expect — are on my website: 🌐 https://prehistoricportugal.com 📺See all of my visits to Portugal's prehistoric places: • Prehistoric Portugal visits 💬 What do you think about these mysterious cave images?
