With thanks to Yorkshire and North East Film Archives for the footage. This latest release from Katie Spencer - a limited edition 7” record - is borne out of her deeply held connection to the city of Kingston-upon-Hull, East Yorkshire. ‘Stirling Ash’ - the title track - shimmers like the city’s river captured on saturated mid 70’s film, whilst her tribute to one of the most cherished singer-songwriters of the North continues the river’s flow, out into a Humber estuary bespeckled with late Victorian paddle steamers. Commissioned by the Freedom Festival of Hull, ‘Stirling Ash’ belongs to a project entitled Re:Score “breathing new life into old film” which celebrates this beloved northern docklands city. Spencer’s sound - as on her 2022 album ‘The Edge of the Land’ - stems from her timeless finger-picked acoustic guitar style, that draws from the same era in which the grainy ship-building footage was taken. Accompanied by Spencer Cozens on Steinway Piano this grand 7-minute instrumental shines with a brightness and nostalgia to be found nowhere else. Side B features a re-imagined take on Michael Chapman’s ‘Shuffleboat River Farewell’. Originally recorded as an 80th birthday gift to the revered songwriter, who made the city his home in the early 1970’s, ‘Shuffleboat River Farewell’ is a paean to the Victorian paddle steamers that ferried across the estuary before the construction of the Humber Bridge. Spencer’s re-kindling of this song was commissioned by Michael’s wife Andru shortly before this esteemed songwriter passed away that same year. This record celebrates Hull, the city, the river, it’s music and the great estuary that runs into the expansive North Sea.
