A widely available steroid Dexamethasone has emerged as the first drug to be effective in saving the lives of critical Covid-19 patients. It is not some new, expensive medicine but an old, cheap steroid that can cut the risk of death by a third for patients on ventilators. For those on oxygen, it cut deaths by a fifth. But, it does not appear to help less ill patients. Dexamethasone is an anti-inflammatory steroid that has been used since the early 1960s, generally used to treat a range of skin allergic reactions as well as inflammatory bowel disease, rheumatic arthritis, and asthma. The drug can be given either orally or through an IV. This anti-inflammatory steroid can have a huge impact and it could be of huge benefit in poorer countries with high numbers of Covid-19 patients.
