Researching about Maelifell “Big Green Volcano” has been interesting as information is limited on the internet. This improved the adventure as we did not know what to expect. I have only seen images of a big beautiful green volcano and wanted to witness it with my own eyes. Time, weather and knowledge were against us in this trip. We were aiming for Landmannalaugar with a detour to Maelifell but had never driven an F-Road nor researched the dangers on our route. From Vik we drove north F208 to F210. Reaching Maelifell at 10pm in July was an epic spectacle. It was unfortunately cloudy but gave a spooky sense of the vast landscape and surreal sense of the beauty of nature. Black sand, a big green volcano and Glacier Rivers surrounded us. Being the only people in the area was the highlight from this adventure. Maelifell is a hidden gem of Iceland, it’s worth the effort just to see something so surreal with your own eyes.
