182 Miles of GRAVEL BIKING along Texas's most famous and beautiful Overland 4x4 route! This portion is from waking up on a deserted island near Mason, going through a rowdy race finish in Castell, and then to our own finish in Llano, TX. Thank you Lagoonsleep.com for the pillow and great sleep overnight. Starts off a bit slow trying to figure out what's going on while the coffee kicks in, then picks up the pace going around House Mountain, rolling through a big crowd in Castell for lunch, and wraps up with a drag race to see who can finish first! Chapters: 00:00 Waking up on the island, surveying the bike rig. 6:00 First Gravel! And bike tracks. We are on the right course! 8:25 Gravel starting to get a bit muddy and deep-sandy. 9:50 Spotting first other cyclist. 11:30 Developing a blister and doing treatment. 12:20 First water crossing. 16:30 Passing another cyclist on HWY 87. 20:35 First sight of HOUSE MOUNTAIN! 21:40 Cool water crossing! 23:00 First signs of neck pain. 23:28 Skunk! Plus more water crossings and thick gravel. 27:49 Emily starts doing yoga and rest break. 31:30 Feeling alone. Feels spooky but cool! 35:00 Starting to think about Monday. :( 36:00 Entering Castell for lunch! 38:45 Lubing chain and pedal cleats after lunch. 40:25 Lubing Kai's chain in secret cuz that's what dad's do. ;) 41:43 Gear review - Rear bag, bottle cages, rear Continental tire, Niner frame. 42:50 Back on the road after 4 tacos and a river crossing! Simulating if you started the actual race. 44:00 Gear I'm using - Garmin 840, Assioma Power meter pedals, Niner Alloy RLT, Squirt lube, Olight RN 1500 headlight, Amazfit T-Rex 3 for HR, Rival mechanical 11 speed, Profile Design aerobars, Otto elbow pads, Insta360 X4 camera, 50mm tires. 48:15 Bring a 4wd support vehicle just in case the water crossings are muddy from rain. You can make it in a very high performance lifted 2wd, but I wouldn't risk it. 52:15 How much gas we used, reviewing other logistics and what we ate where and why. 55:40 Great race start setup and comparing Garmins vs. Amazfit T-Rex3 watch. 1:01:40 I do COACHING! Email me at Texafornia at the Gmails. 1:03:00 The reasons why sometimes there's no street or stop signs. 1:05:00 Why there's not as much barbed wire fences here. 1:07:00 Heat tips using jersey and water. 1:09:00 How mountain bikers ride differently to be faster... committing to the drop in! 1:10:50 This place looks like Arizona! And how Enduro racing works. 1:15:00 Starting to think about how we will miss this ride together. 1:15:55 My genetic nerve damage that's worsening. How long will I be able to ride before there's too much pain? 1:19:10 Kai and I start racing each other for the finish! And how "shadehunting" works. 1:20:53 The breakneck racepace risky riding BEGINS!!! 1:21:49 Crossing "THE SLAB" across the Llano River at dangerous speed, nearly setting the KOM. 1:23:50 Kai can DESTROY me mountain biking, but I'm still King of the Ultra Road TT... for one more year ;)
