Looking for a budget-friendly way to create beautiful rice paper effects for your crafts? This step-by-step DIY tutorial will show you how to turn napkins, tissue or decoupage paper into handmade faux rice paper you can use in junk journals, collages, and more. I’ll show you how to make faux rice paper using simple materials you probably already have at home: napkins, tissue paper, or decoupage paper. This technique works beautifully with all three — so just grab what’s on hand! All you’ll need in addition is some PVA glue (I especially recommend school glue) and water. I’m also preparing a few follow-up videos where I’ll share ideas and inspiration for how to use these handmade rice papers in your junk journals, collages, and other creative projects. --- 📖 Written Instructions You will need: Napkins / tissue paper / decoupage paper PVA glue (school glue works best) Water (or coffee/tea/watercolors for tinting) Plastic sheet (plastic bags, cereal bags, or any plastic surface) Foam brush Steps: 1. Protect your table. Cover your work surface with plastic (plastic bags, cereal bags, etc.) and tape it down so it stays in place. This makes spreading the glue mixture easier. 2. Mix your glue. Combine 2/3 PVA glue + 1/3 water. (Tip: Use coffee or tea instead of water for a vintage tint, or mix in watercolors for color.) 3. Apply the glue. Spread a layer of the glue mixture onto the plastic surface using a foam brush. 4. Prepare your paper. If using a napkin, carefully separate the layers and use only the top layer to achieve a translucent look. Place your napkin/tissue/decoupage paper on top of the glue-coated plastic. 5. Smooth it out. Gently tap the paper down with your hand. Then carefully dab more glue mixture over the top with the foam brush. (Don’t brush — the napkin will tear!) 6. Lift the edges. Roll the edges of the paper up slightly so it will be easier to remove once dry. 7. Cover completely. Make sure the entire sheet is coated in glue, then let it dry — ideally overnight. 8. Remove when dry. Once dry, your sheet will peel easily from the plastic. If it doesn’t, let it dry a little longer. ✨ Optional: If you’d like to add Distress Spray Stains, first apply the glue mixture and let it dry for 30–60 minutes. Then spray the color onto your sheet and gently dab with a foam brush. Let dry completely. Have you tried making your own rice paper before?
