Various of children sitting in hand-powered ferris wheel in the park STORYLINE: Bangladeshis celebrated Pahela Baishakh on Wednesday - the first day of the Bengali New Year. The new year revellers donned their traditional Bengali outfits to usher in the year 1417. Men, women and children streamed through the streets of the capital Dhaka enjoying the colourful parades and fairs, while dozens of cultural groups performed throughout the city amid tight security. During new year celebrations in 2001, at least 12 people were killed in a bomb blast carried out by the outlawed Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami group.
