Khatami walking away STORYLINE: Iranian President Mohammad Khatami said on Saturday he hopes there will be no war against Iraq and that an "environment of war" had already caused problems for the region. The world has been "scarred by terrorists and terrorism" Khatami told reporters after a ceremonial welcome by Indian President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. The "misuse of this present situation to create an environment of war has brought a lot of problems to our world", he said. He did not say what those problems were, but mentioned the necessity to work for peace to help build trade. The United States has threatened to use force against Iraq if it does not comply with UN resolutions that require it disclose any weapons of mass destruction it possesses and cooperate with UN weapons inspectors. Khatami said he hoped there would be no war against Iraq. Although Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein sent his troops into Iran in 1980, launching an eight-year war that claimed a million lives, Iran shares the view of other Iraqi neighbours that the destabilisation of a war is worse than living with his regime. Thousands of Iranian veterans of the Iran-Iraq war are still suffering from the effects of chemical weapons used against them by Saddam's forces, the Iranian government has said. Khatami arrived in the Indian capital Friday, to be guest of honour at the country's Republic Day parade on Sunday, a celebration of the adoption of the Indian constitution in 1950. Khatami said he would discuss ways the two countries can work for regional peace and increased trade during his meetings with Indian leaders, including Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The status of a pipeline project to carry oil from Iran through Pakistan to India might also be discussed. Iran's oil minister is part of the visiting delegation. The pipeline, estimated to cost some 1.2 billion (b) US dollars would significantly lower the cost of India's oil imports. However, the deal has stalled because of long-standing enmity between Pakistan and India. Officials from both sides will explore the possibility of routing the pipeline under the sea, which would almost double its cost, an Indian oil ministry official said. Khatami's delegation includes Foreign Affairs Minister Kamal Kharazzi, Defense Minister Ali Shamkhani, Science and Technology Minister Mostafa Moin and Oil Minister Bijan Namdar Zanganeh.
