Just before sunset, the thick, dark canopy of clouds over Sequim opened giving us a clear, picture-perfect view of the night sky, allowing us to witness and photograph the Super Blood Wolf Moon Eclipse. With my Nikon DSL camera mounted on one tripod, iPhone on a second tripod and spotting scope on a third tripod, we observed and documented the eclipse from 7:15 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. PST, running into the house every 20 minutes or so to warm up! With the clear night sky, the temperature dropped rapidly below freezing. Frost was forming on the lawn and condensation was dripping from my tripod. Nearing the end of the blood moon total eclipse, I noticed that my exposures were getting significantly longer, so I peered into my lens. The UV filter was coated with condensation! I quickly wiped it off with a cotton cloth before the moister turned to ice. The last series of photos, one of which I include as the final blood moon image in these two montages was a much faster exposure. For those you who are interested in my camera settings, I set the exposure to Manual with my 200mm zoom lens focused on infinity. Note that I found that exposures longer than 1/5th second were not as sharp due to the motion of the moon (the moon’s orbit plus the earth’s rotation). These are the full moon and blood moon exposures: Full moon: ISO 400, 1/640 sec @ f/10 Blood moon (with condensation on lens): ISO 6,400, .5 sec @ f/4 Blood moon (cleaned lens): ISO 6,400, 1/8 sec @ f/9 Music Credits: Prelude No. 20 by Chris Zabriskie is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/...)
