Just like its neighboring East Asian countries, Vietnam’s key to success is to invest in education. One of the main challenges Vietnam is facing is the need to increase the quality of its universities and for these institutions to offer more training in the skills that the business sector needs. Visit: http://www.worldbank.org/education and http://www.worldbank.org/vietnam TRANSCRIPT We are here at the temple of literature in Hanoi. We have had the privilege to talking to students, to administrators, to teachers, to government officials about education here in Vietnam. Vietnam is a country that has made significant improvement in the quality of education in the recent decades. There are many factors behind that, one of those is the investment that the country has done in early childhood education. I have the privilege yesterday of visiting a school in Bac Ninh province near Hanoi. There I was able to see the results of investment and commitment that the country has in early childhood education. I was able to see really committed teachers who are well-read and motivated to making sure that the students have the right stimulates and really concerns about well-being and learning process of all the students in the class. But despite all the progress there are also several challenges. For instants about 70 percent of students will continue to the secondary schools. The number should not be 70, it should be 100 percent. This is the country that should make sure that all the youth finish 11th and 12th years of secondary and many more of them should continue to tertiary education. It is a very important challenge for the country to make sure that there is an increase in quality of university and increase in the match between what university gives in terms of curriculums and what the business sector and the productive sector need. Making sure that the country makes the right investment in education in the future is the right key to success. It has been the key to success in many East Asian economies and I’m sure it will be the key to success for Vietnam.
