As part of the Fountains Abbey Estate, the Studley Royal Water Garden is a great place to walk around after exploring the stunning ruins of the abbey. We were fortunate to visit on such a beautiful sunny day in the summertime which brought out all the lush greens of the lawns and enhanced the reflections on the attractive geometrically designed ponds. Studley Royal Water Garden is the result of the vision of John Aislabie and his son William. In the early 18th century John Aislabie had great plans to impress visitors to his Yorkshire estate and turned the wild and wooded valley of the River Skell into one of England’s most spectacular Georgian water gardens. John Aislabie actually inherited the Studley Royal estate in 1693 before becoming Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1718. Inspired by the work of the great French landscape gardeners, John and Wiiliam created the Water Garden with its formal, geometric design and extraordinary vistas, including the Temple of Piety. In 1767 William Aislabie bought the Fountains Abbey ruins to complete the garden and create the ultimate vista. The climax of the garden is known as the ‘Surprise View’ or ‘Anne Boleyn’s Seat.' ‘Surprise View’ refers to the astonishing view of the abbey ruins in the distance and was designed to cause a sharp intake of breath when visitors to the garden came across it. The garden you see today is little changed from the one that would have impressed Aislabie’s visitors 200 years ago. From the abbey you can follow the gentle banks of the River Skell down to the garden which has been channelled into canals, cascades and tranquil moon ponds, before walking out onto a sprawling green lawn, decorated with statues dotted around tranquil moon ponds. Stroll around the ponds and down the canal to see the statues up close. Up along the High Ride path we find the dark Serpentine Tunnel, the Temple of Fame, Surprise View, Anne Boleyn's Seat and the Octagon Tower. And back down in the main garden resides the Temple of Piety and Moon Pond. Recognised as a site of cultural importance, it was granted World Heritage Site status in 1986. While it's often thought that the magnificent abbey ruin is the reason for the designation, it's actually the water garden at Studley Royal. Listed by UNESCO as 'one of the most magnificent Georgian water gardens ever created', Studley Royal is a landscape which has been artificially manipulated to such a standard as to be considered a 'feat of human creative genius'.
