Independent Power Producers (IPPs) face a variety of challenges. The biggest one in the South African context is the availability of grid connection points. South Africa’s grid infrastructure is aging and wasn’t originally designed with green energy in mind. As more renewables come online, the way energy flows through the grid has changed. The main challenge is the uncertainty around whether you as an IPP or solar project developer, will be able to access the grid capacity. What makes this particularly difficult is the long and costly development process that happens before you even know if you'll be granted access. This uncertainty adds to the overall risk and cost for developers, which eventually gets passed on to the end consumer. There are many creative ways in which more capacity can be created on the national grid. The integration of battery storage also presents a valuable opportunity to support South Africa’s energy demand and renewable targets. 🎥 Finding this content valuable?
