Sunday Development course at San Clemente, California with Jason Sweet, former USAF Pararescueman (PJ). Buddy Breathing is a water confidence/pre-SCUBA evaluation exercise utilized in Special Operations training to assess a candidate's ability to remain calm & provide their "buddy" with air while under stress/harassment from instructors. Rules of Buddy Breathing: 1. Only one breath is authorized per turn. 2. At least one buddy must maintain grip of the snorkel at all times. 3. Buddy team must keeps heads submerged, floating/treading water on the surface while breathing only out of the snorkel. 4. Buddy team must maintain connection via linking left arms. 5. Students may not resist instructors. Traditionally, Buddy Breathing evaluation time is 2:30 (2 minutes & 30 seconds). Instructor harassment is classified into three categories: 1. Mild Harassment- Instructor may not take breaths. -Authorized: Splashing, flooding mask, Checking Grips, Check Snorkel, 2. Moderate Harassment- Instructor may take 1/3 breaths -Authorized: Splashing, flooding mask, Checking Grips, Check Snorkel, Barrel Roll, Submersion 3. Full Harassment- Instructor take 2/3 student breaths -Authorized: Splashing, flooding mask, Checking Grips, Check Snorkel, Barrel Roll, Submersion to pool bottom, candidates may wear tactical tops & bottoms, instructors my utilize "alternate" harassment. Always have a lifeguard present when participating in water confidence exercises. Traditionally, buddy breathing was a United States Air Force Pararescue (PJ) Indoctrination (INDOC) Course evaluation & pre-SCUBA exercise. However, the exercise is now performed by all Air Force Special Warfare candidates to include Pararescue (PJ), Combat Control (CCT), and Special Reconnaissance (SR). The top priorities snorkel, and to effectively clear water from & breathe successfully from the snorkel each round. Individuals should use as minimal movement as possible to minimize oxygen drive & avoid increasing heart rate.
