Carol Lacey survived cervical cancer, but needed a total pelvic exenteration, losing several organs.

In this deeply inspiring and emotional video, we share the powerful story of Carol Lacey, a courageous woman from Boulder Creek, California, who survived metastatic recurring cervical cancer through one of the most radical procedures in cancer treatment: a total pelvic exenteration. At age 46, in 2011, Carol began experiencing symptoms she attributed to pre-menopause, including discomfort during sexual intercourse. A visit to her gynecologist revealed a mass, which a biopsy confirmed as cervical cancer. Just two years earlier, a Pap test had come back positive for human papilloma virus (HPV)—a common virus that most often clears on its own. But in Carol’s case, HPV persisted and progressed into cancer. From that moment forward, Carol’s life changed forever. She underwent pre-surgery chemotherapy, followed by a radical hysterectomy, and then post-surgery chemotherapy after cancer was found in a lymph node. Though she initially avoided internal radiation, she did receive external radiation treatment. Just 10 months later, her world was turned upside down again: her cancer had returned. This recurrence was more aggressive. Doctors told Carol her only remaining option was a total pelvic exenteration—a life-altering surgery involving the removal of multiple organs in the pelvic cavity, including the bladder, colon, anus, and vagina. Unsure what this entailed, Carol searched the procedure online—and was stunned. The surgery left her with both a colostomy bag and an ostomy bag, which she now wears daily to manage waste. In addition to the physical adjustments, Carol continued chemotherapy, taking the drug cisplatin, which led to lasting tinnitus and hearing loss requiring a hearing aid. Through unimaginable challenges, Carol’s strength and sunny disposition have not wavered. With the support of her partner and a skilled ostomy nurse, she’s learned to manage her new lifestyle—swimming, hiking, and even enjoying the hot tub just like before her diagnosis. Her journey highlights not only the physical toll of cervical cancer treatment but the emotional resilience needed to survive and thrive. Carol is a proud advocate and active member of Cervivor (https://www.cervivor.org), a vital support community for people diagnosed with cervical cancer. She emphasizes that no one facing cervical cancer is alone. Resources, support, and connection are available—and they make a real difference. Whether you're a survivor, a caregiver, or simply looking to learn more about cervical cancer, HPV, or life after pelvic exenteration, Carol’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance, love, and education. This video sheds light on a rarely discussed side of cancer survival—what it truly means to live after a diagnosis and radical treatment.
