Text: George Mackay Brown, 1970 Image: 'The Blind Fiddler' by Peter Benjamin Graham, Oil On Canvas 81 x 51 cm, PGAF#25 Introductory note by Davies: “George Mackay Brown’s play, ‘A Spell for Green Corn’, concerns a fiddle-player in Orkney who, in incarnations through the ages, ‘cleanses the islands with music’. At first he appears on the beach with a medieval saint who transforms stones to fish; at last, he is an itinerant musician at Hamnavoe Fair, blind, trying to get National Assistance to replace the broken strings on his fiddle. At the end of the play, as an appendix, there is a ‘seventeenth century’ notebook, which belonged to Storm Kolson, the violin player, and from which I have chosen the seven fragments of text for my work, set with interlinking instrumental dances featuring the violin.” Publisher’s note: “This work was commissioned by the New Town Concerts Society and first performed on 16 February 1976 in Edinburgh by the Fires of London with Mary Thomas (mezzo-soprano) conducted by the composer.”
